Homi Bhabha discusses in his writings about time, narrative and the margins of the modern nation the idea of ​​"forgetting to remember" as a way of recovering national identity, stories that are built on historical situations of collapse. "It is this forgetting [of the nation's past history] — the meaning of a minus sign in origin — that constitutes the beginning of the nation's narrative.... Being forced to forget becomes the basis for remembering the nation, populating it again, imagining the possibility of other liberating forms of cultural identification." (Homi K. Bhabha, The Location of Culture (London and New York: Routledge, 1994), 160-161). Would the abandonment of these buildings be a way of forgetting our colonial past? A minus sign at the origin so that we can constitute another beginning of the nation's narrative? These are the questions I asked myself when creating these drawings, part of the group of works entitled "Rotas Esquecidas".
